Fall 2017 Art Alumni Invitational Exhibition

PROSPECTUS

 

Exhibit Dates: Sunday, September 10 – Thursday, October 12, 2017

Entry Deadline: Friday, March 17, 2017

 

The 2017 Hillsdale College Art Alumni Invitational Exhibition will include the work of Hillsdale College graduates with a major or minor concentration in art. Non-major/minors are welcome to submit, but preference will be given to majors and minors. Accepted works shall reflect the department’s studio areas of concentration including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and related media. The opening reception will coincide with Hillsdale College Homecoming, Saturday, September 30, 2017. Time T.B.D.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Submission Media:

1-2 Digital images for each submitted piece, up to a total of 10 images (5 works).

Friday, March 17, 2017 (5pm Eastern time)

 

ELIGIBILITY:

The 2017 Hillsdale College Art Alumni Invitational Exhibition is open to all graduates of Hillsdale College with, preferably, a major or minor concentration in art.

 

MEDIA & LIMITATIONS:

Submitted works shall reflect the department’s studio areas of concentration including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and related media.

 

All 2-D work must be professionally framed and properly rigged with hanging wire. Drawings and similar presented media must be properly matted and under plexi-glass.

 

3-D works must include a professional display base if not intended to be free-standing. Pedestals with tops measuring a maximum 16” x 16” will be provided for “table-top” works. Any special presentation requirements must be furnished by the artists. Floor and larger works must be self-supporting. Work must fit through a standard door.

 

The Hillsdale College Art Department reserves the right to exclude from exhibition, works that arrive at the gallery in unsuitable and/or unstable condition.

 

ENTRY PROCEDURES and APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applications will be accepted via email, online file transfer (Dropbox, Google Docs, etc.) to Bryan Springer at bspringer@hillsdale.edu. Photos may also be mailed by post to:

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, March 17, 2017 (5pm Eastern time)

 

Applicants must provide a Word .doc with the following:

  • Name, year of graduation, and major/minor

  • Artist statement (up to 1000 characters)

  • Artwork information in detail (see below)

  • Digital Image files

 

NUMBER OF WORKS:

1-5 total artworks may be submitted for consideration. Each submission must include 1-2 digital image files of the work. Submitted works in possession of another person or entity beside the artist must be confirmed as available for the exhibition before submission. Selection of submitted works will be made by the Hillsdale College Art Faculty, based on submitted digital image files.

 

EXCLUSIONS:

The Hillsdale College Art Department reserves the right to exclude submissions from consideration, including works that are deemed unsuitable for campus display based on content, presentation, and/or lack of professionalism.

Format: JPEG

Pixel Dimensions: Minimum 1920px on longest side

File Size: Less than 3MB each

File Naming:   LastName-Title(number).jpg

LastName-Title(number)detail.jpg

                        Example: Stewart-AutumnLandscape01.jpg

*Photos will be used solely for evaluation purposes and will not be published in any way without the permission of the artist.

 

Each work submitted must include the following details in a Word document:

  • Title                                                                                       

  • Medium

  • Height/Width/Depth

  • Value* (Indicate for sale, or not for sale)

  • Year completed

  • Owner of the work

  • Description (300 character limit)

 

*All submissions must include a declaration of a monetary value for insurance purposes. This value may not be altered at a later date. Indicate insurance value and sale value, if different.

 

PROOFREAD your data carefully as this information may be used to generate title cards and promotional materials, as well as for insurance purposes.

 

ADJUDICATION:

Jurying will be conducted from digital images of actual works available for the exhibition.

Final works for exhibition will be selected by the Hillsdale College Faculty.

 

SHIPPING:

It is the responsibility of the artist to securely pack their works for the exhibition, arrange and pay for shipping to Hillsdale College, and insure their artworks while in transit. Please ensure your specific type of work is packed properly to keep it protected. The Hillsdale College Art Department will pay for the return-shipping of the artwork to the same location.

 

Also, it is advisable that all artists document their packaging process using digital photos prior to closing all crates and/or boxes for shipment. This documentation may provide critical information to support claims against carriers for damage in transit.

 

Works will be re-packed for return shipping in November 2017.

 

INSURANCE AND SALES:

Hillsdale College will provide insurance coverage of work while on their premises for market value as confirmed by Hillsdale College. Artists will be responsible for insurance of work in transit. Any inquiries on the works indicated as being for sale will be directed to the individual artists for any monetary transaction. Hillsdale College shall receive no money from the sale of any works. Shipping of purchased works will be the responsibility of the artists and/or collectors.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY RIGHTS:

No reproductions of any work will be used without the explicit permission of the artist. If, in the case that the Hillsdale College Art Department wishes to reproduce images of the exhibit for educational and publicity purposes (i.e. postings on the College and departmental websites, the departmental social media channels, and other College print materials), it will obtain permission from the artist first. 

 

CALENDAR:

Email submittal deadline: March 17, 2017 (5pm Eastern Time)

Acceptance notification: Mid-April, 2017

Works to arrive by August 25, 2017

Exhibition dates: Sunday, September 10 – Thursday, October 12, 2017

Reception: Homecoming – Saturday, September 30, 2017 (details to follow)

Return shipping of work: November 2017

Damage Claim: Immediately upon return
